Bronwyn Pike or your doctor: Who do you believe?

‘These kinds of claims, that people are dying while waiting [for] appointments, I find very, very hard to believe’.

These were Health Minister Bronwyn Pike’s words yesterday when confronted with more evidence that people are dying in Victoria while waiting for treatment at our public hospitals.

The AMA surveyed General Practitioners about their experiences referring patients for outpatient appointments at public hospitals in Victoria. Of the 100 GPs who respondend:

  • 83% felt that access to outpatient appointments had deteriorated over the last three years.
  • 79% thought that access for surgical patients was poor or very poor.
  • 82% said that their patients had deteriorated due to an extended wait for outpatient appointments.

Sadly, a small number of GPs reported of patients who died of a related condition during an extended wait for a public outpatient specialist appointment.

This survey backed up recent findings that 500 Victorians are dying each year while waiting for surgery.

It also shows that some people die while waiting to get on the waiting list.
