Telstra Wants To Axe Phone Boxes In Glen Eira
Caulfield is one of the many suburbs being targeted by Telstra’s payphone blitz. The City of Glen Eira is on Telstra’s hit list with fifteen payphones facing potential removal.
Of those fifteen phones, six are in the heart of Caulfield. Advice received from Telstra lists the following locations for possible payphone removal:
486 Glen Eira Road, Caulfield
229 Balaclava Road, Caulfield North
141 Kooyong Road, Caulfield North
196 Glen Eira Road, Elsternwick
12 Hartington Street, Elsternwick
1268 Glenhuntly Road, Glen Huntly
Marked payphones bear a sticker. Locals are invited to oppose their removal during a three-month consultation period. A Telstra spokesperson said no payphone’s fate had been decided. “We have had little community feedback through the sticker process and are now waiting for a response from councils,” she said.
Telstra lost $30 million on payphone provision last year, but was not abandoning its universal service obligation, she said. Cr David Feldman, Mayor for the City of Glen Eira said the he wanted to ensure that residents were not disadvantaged and wanted to ensure that Telstra complies with its universal service obligation.
